Maira: Helping to lighten the load

--MAIRA IS NOW SPONSORED!--

By Michael Carson

By Michael Carson

We started several new staff members this year, and one of them is our education assistant, Maira. She helps me with the ever-growing education program, and I’m very grateful for it. We’re excited to invite her to Beach Christmas 2017!

We now have more than 20 kids in our education program and five in school in our young adult program, and we needed help keeping track of their behavior, talking to teachers, checking on grades, covering books and most of all being available for homework.

Maira works part-time for us in the afternoon and in the morning she works for Santa Monica, one of the schools where several of our kids attend. Being an employee at Santa Monica allows her to easily check up on those students, speak with teachers and keep track of how each of our kids are doing.

Maira spends her weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings at our ministry house, available to help any one of our education kids and teens with what they might need to do. This allows our staff and BC team to spend time doing the rest of the jobs necessary to make our organization run properly.

Please help Maira enjoy her first Beach Christmas with us this year!

Alba: Our caring house mom

--ALBA IS NOW SPONSORED!--

By Courtney Sullivan

By Courtney Sullivan

Alba and her husband Oscar have been the house parents at our Breaking Chains building for the past few years, and the value they bring to our BC family is immeasurable.

Alba is as caring and selfless as they come. She has a joy that radiates from her and a open heart that makes it easy for others to trust her. She has been an especially powerful influence on the young women at BC over the years, serving as a mentor and a confidant. She has helped Dixon navigate the ups and downs of life and school, pushed her to keep going, and rejoiced with her as she finished high school this month. She also has a very special bond with Karen, which is beautiful to watch. Not many people know how to interact with Karen given her language inabilities, but Alba has taken her under her wing and loved her in a remarkable way.

In addition to her work as a house parent, Alba also volunteers to teach one of our children's Sunday school classes. The kids love her energy, and we are blessed that she takes the time to share the word of God with them each week.

We have made wonderful memories with Alba during the last few Beach Christmas celebrations, and we look forward to making more this year. Please consider donating to give this deserving house mom a wonderful trip with our BC family!

Antonio: A testament to God's grace

--ANTONIO IS NOW SPONSORED!--

By Courtney Sullivan

By Courtney Sullivan

We can hardly think of Antonio without smiling. This young man has come such a long way over the several years that we have known him, and his life is a testament to God's grace and faithfulness.

Antonio lived as a part of our BC family for a few years. During that time we watched his character soften from a hard, defiant teenager, to a helpful and respectful young man. He began growing in responsibility, and he loved and was loved by our BC family. However, at a certain point Antonio fell into addiction. Rather than hide what was going on, he made the brave and wise decision to come tell us and ask for help. He then diligently completed a period of time in a Christian drug rehabilitation program. Upon leaving the program, we decided it was best that he not to return to the BC facility to avoid the temptation of the streets which are so close in proximity. He moved in with Mountain Top Ministries, another area ministry run by our close friend David Logue. Under their guidance, Antonio has continued to thrive and grow in ways I'm not sure he even imagined possible.

Antonio just completed his fourth grade year of education and is currently working in Santa Lucia, where Mountain Top Ministries is located, helping to repair roads. We are so grateful for Antonio's story the example it shows of God's power.

Despite no longer living in our facility, Antonio will always be a part of our family and, as such, it is always a joy to spend time with him during Beach Christmas. Please consider donating to make his trip possible!

Edis: A loving, longtime family member

--EDIS IS NOW SPONSORED!--

By Courtney Sullivan

By Courtney Sullivan

Edis has been a part of our Breaking Chains family since the beginning. Over the years, we have ridden many highs and lows together and continued to grow in love along the way.

Edis and her husband, Eugenio, are parents to four children. Raising four children is challenging enough without the added weight of urban poverty, but Edis does her best and continually strives to set a good example for her children. She works hard to help bring in income for the family and still be there as a supportive mother. Having little education herself, Edis makes a point to urge her kids forward in academics, hoping fiercely that by doing so they can rise above their circumstances.

We love having Edis and her family be a part of Beach Christmas. With so much going on in their daily lives, it is a joy to be able to watch Edis relax and spend quality time with her children. The weekend away is a precious gift for Edis every year, and we can't wait to watch her and her family make more memories this year.

Please consider supporting Edis by sponsoring her for Beach Christmas 2017!

Karen: Seeing the world differently

--KAREN IS NOW SPONSORED!--

By Amber Foster

By Amber Foster

Karen is a special gift to us. She teaches us to see the world through different eyes and to reach out to people wherever they are. She came to us at the beginning of the year after a lifetime of pain and failed placements. Karen is deaf and also has some undetermined mental deficits. She has very little language and very little desire to acquire any. But she is funny and theatrical and quick with a smile if she feels she can trust you.

We have spent the past year learning sign language as a family, perfecting our mimicking skills, and reaching out to Karen in our own ways. We have seen trust begin to grow into her eyes and through her interactions. We have seen her grow as she works each week with a private tutor to practice life skills and also learn crafts that she may be able to sell one day.

Karen and Alba (our house mom) have a very special bond. Alba will often take Karen home for the day and even invited her along on their latest family vacation. Karen flourishes in the family setting and loves to help out in the kitchen. It is our prayer for Karen that we can find an older family that will take her under their wing and allow her to be a permanent part of their family. In the meantime we will continue to love her as part of ours.

Help us share our family Christmas with Karen and continue to heal the hurts of her past.

Beach Christmas 2017 is coming! Please consider supporting

IMG_4168.jpg

It’s that time of year! Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is on its way, which means we are gearing up for our annual Beach Christmas celebration!

This is the sixth year for Beach Christmas, and it has become an annual tradition that our BC family looks forward to throughout the year. Each December, we take a couple of days to get away from the hustle and stress of the city in favor of a more relaxed environment. We spend quality time together as a family - laughing, sharing stories, and praising God for a year filled with His love and faithfulness. And we share some great food and presents along the way! (Click here to view photos from last year’s celebration).

Beach Christmas is such a beloved tradition because it allows time to stop for a couple of days while we focus on what is important. We love seeing our teens enjoy themselves and feel proud after putting in the hard work to finish the school year. We love watching parents spend time with their children and be in the moment without having to worry about putting food on the table for a couple of days. And we love seeing kids get the opportunity to be kids -to laugh, be carefree, and enjoy the sun and waves the way they were meant to be enjoyed.

This year’s celebration will take place December 17th and 18th. Each individual attending will need a sponsor of $150 to cover their costs of food, transportation, lodging and presents for the weekend.

Individual profiles will be posted throughout the coming days. If you are interested in sponsorship, simply comment below the profile of the individual you would like to sponsor. You can also email courtney@bchonduras.org to indicate your desire to contribute.

Donations may be made online at bchonduras.org/donate or by sending check contributions to Breaking Chains Honduras at P.O. Box 20454 Oklahoma City, OK 73156.

Some of our fondest memories as a family have come through our Beach Christmas celebration, and we can’t wait to make more memories this year. Please consider supporting!
