Virtual School 2020: Learning, Adapting and Achieving in a Pandemic

By Michael Carson

If anyone would have told me a year ago about any of our BC kids ever doing “virtual school,” I would have explained all the reasons that would be impossible. But here we are in 2020 in this difficult time worldwide, and most of our kids live in 16x16 foot houses/rooms doing bilingual school from a screen, with hardly any help. I can’t tell you what a miracle that is.

There are times I am on the phone, messaging with or calling a parent or child from our program several times a day. It’s a lot of work for all of us, and it’s something we have done, with only summer as a break, since March.

We bought tablets for the kids who needed them at the start of this new virtual school year. We send an internet packet once a week to phones and tablets, whatever each can use. Rafa delivers whatever school supplies and books they need all behind masks and safety protocol.

Our kids struggle with so many different things, and certain ones have struggled even more than others through virtual school. Nonetheless, here we all are plugging along, fighting and helping each other along the way. I am truly in awe of our kids’ resilience through this whole pandemic. They have fought hard to keep up with everything, and their parents and our staff have kept them motivated.

I know this whole process will only leave our kids stronger and more resilient than they already were, and for that I am so proud of them and their parents alike. It’s been hard. I can’t even explain how hard. But they keep going. They keep fighting.

When this all started, we began sending money to each family each week. These parents were without any resources as the entire country was shut down. Their sponsors have taken turns sending extra money so that we can provide each of these families with food and other necessities. Everyone’s generosity moves us in ways we can’t describe, and watching these families try to say thank you will forever be etched into my memory. We as a ministry feel honored to be a part of each one of these children’s fight to continue their education, despite all obstacles. Our parents are survivors, and we are humbled to help them with whatever they need.

We want to say a special thank you to each of you who have donated extra money to feed these kids, these families, these precious souls so they can focus completely on their homework. No one should have to try and learn on an empty stomach. Thank you to each of you who have kept that from happening. If you would like to know how to help with this particular aspect of our ministry right now, you can contact courtney@bchonduras.org.

Please continue to pray for our families as parts of Honduras begin to open, but virtual school continues. Most believe the ongoing effect on the Honduran economy will continue for a very long time. Please pray our kids and families keep their spirits up and keep fighting for their future. We will be alongside them cheering them on, doing the work necessary to get them through.

COVID Relief: Rony's perspective

120328883_685099569070628_4236398518417107704_n.jpg

Our next staff member to share their testimony about serving others through food bags is Rony, another one of our loving house parents. Please take a quick moment to read his words of gratitude and heartbreak.

“The help for our country, that this ministry has given during this pandemic, has been incredible. I thank God that he always continues to put kind people in our path to help our country.

Speaking specifically about the food bags, when people wait in line, and in the end we aren’t able to give them a food bag because we have run out; that breaks my heart. We have a limited amount of food bags for people, and we have to set some aside for families with great needs already connected to the ministry. It makes things so challenging. We look at each other wondering what to do. In the end, this whole process has humbled us.

I thank God especially for the ability to be a part of this blessing, because we as staff are also able to pass out a few bags to our own neighbors who have enormous needs. This help is so good; more than good, truly it’s amazing.

I have seen people line up for food bags since the day before, sleeping outside, despite the rain and sometimes chilly weather. They risk their safety in an area that isn’t considered the most secure in our city. When we see that, as staff members, we just think, “Wow, what are they going through for a small bag of food?” There’s so much need; we wish we could help everyone, but that’s simply impossible. In the end, this is such a help, such a blessing for our country, specifically here in Tegucigalpa.

Thank you to all of you who donate, and thank God for this ministry and for this ability to help in this way. God bless all of you.” - Rony

COVID Relief: Marilu's perspective

Since COVID hit in March, Honduras has been mostly under stay-at-home orders. That means many people have been out of work for several months and have been struggling to feed their families. In April, we began seeking donations in order to pack and distribute food provision bags to families in need. Thanks to incredibly generous support, we have been able to distribute bags to 300 families per week since April. The bag contains staple food items which will last the family about a week.

Our teens and on-the-ground staff work diligently each week to make this effort possible. They have felt blessed to be able to serve so many, but also heartbroken by the incredible need in the country. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be sharing the personal testimonies of our staff members regarding their experiences with food bag distribution. The first is Marilu, one of our loving house parents who has been a part of the ministry for the past few years. Please take a moment to read her perspective:

"This is a short story about my experience handing out food bags. There are so many stories I could tell, but I have to shorten or leave out some because of space and time. I’m excited to share that I had the privilege of being the first staff member to begin packing the food bags with our youth. It was an opportunity to see and prepare their hearts so that we could complete this work filled with love and dedication. We began by reflecting on how important what we were doing was for so many families that would have the opportunity to receive one of these food bags. I was impressed to see that despite the hard work and the time necessary to complete it, they did the work very well.

We have so many stories that have come out of the food distribution. I would like to share with you about a day that there were so many people that I knew there was no way we would be able to serve them all. The Holy Spirit reminded me that we could still bless them through a prayer, and I asked that they bow their heads and pray to God. I prayed that those that didn´t receive a physical blessing that day could still feel the joy, peace, and hope of God and know that in the near future they would have an opportunity to receive one. It was very impactful to see that despite not being able to reach so many of the population with food, the reaction of the people that didn´t receive anything was just as I had prayed. They were calm and full of joy, the joy that only comes from God's presence. I have been filled with so much satisfaction, and my heart has overflowed with joy seeing so many special things happen in the lives of the people that are receiving food bags - people who are blind, pregnant women, young mothers, disabled people and the elderly as well as young people with a great need for food. In this way a huge amount of people have benefited throughout this crisis. We have even been able to help out our own neighbors - one of whom is a single mother of a baby who recently had open heart surgery, and another is a taxi driver who has been left without income by the transportation restrictions.

There would be too many stories if I stopped to tell you each one that I have experienced, so I leave you with this brief summary of this great blessing we have received. I can say that I personally have seen the fulfillment of many of God’s promises in my own life through being a part of this great project.

Blessings to all!!" - Marilu

Moments of light: Celebrating our four graduates!

Izaac, Ricardo and Eunice

Izaac, Ricardo and Eunice

Ask any of us, and we will tell you 2019 proved a hard year. We learned a new accounting system, trained new employees, suffered through fires, lost beloved kids, waded through new trauma and the list continues. But we also witnessed the good, the bright and the beautiful. One of those bright spots shown through four of our kids graduating from both middle and high school, respectively.

Maholy

Maholy

Maholy has gone to Santa Monica for years now, and last month we had the chance to see her graduate from ninth grade, receiving a medal for her academic excellence and recognition for her exemplary behavior.  Maholy has always been focused and diligent in her school work, so we are proud to see that rewarded and reflected in her 91 percent average.

Izaac

Izaac

Izaac graduated from ninth grade in December, and he also got a medal for his academic excellence. We celebrated this accomplishment by fulfilling his dream of receiving training to become a coffee barista, a growing employment field in Honduras. We hope we can see both Maholy and Izaac graduate from high school in a few years. Please keep them in your prayers!

Eunice and Ricardo

Eunice and Ricardo

Eunice and Ricardo both graduated from high school with an emphasis information technology. Ricardo has lived with us for four years, and we’ve seen incredible growth in him during that time. As he walked across the stage, we beamed with pride to think of all he’s been through and all he’s accomplished.

Eunice has lived with us for two years and is always a light. She shined on stage receiving her medal for academic excellence, and her mother who was able to attend could not have prouder to see her daughter be recognized. We are proud of both of these kids for fighting through their past and never giving up on their goals.

Eunice plans to enter the military, and Ricardo plans to attend college while also pursuing his passion for music. Please continue to keep these two in your prayers as they take their next steps.

We believe education provides an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty within these kids’ lives. No matter where they go in life they will face it with a better education and the knowledge they have a family here with us. God is doing great things in all four of those lives. Thank you to their sponsors for making all this possible! You can view more photos on our Facebook album here.

It's #GivingTuesday! Check out how your contributions can impact our BC family!

Giving Tuesday 2019.jpg

It’s #GivingTuesday! A national day of giving following the Thanksgiving holiday. As we enter the Christmas season and near the end of 2019, there are several ways in which your generosity can help sustain our BC family in the New Year. Check out our Giving Guide below to see our top needs for 2020 and how your contributions can make a difference.

—2020 GIVING GUIDE—

HONDURAN STAFF SUPPORT: $600 MONTHLY

We are blessed to have an incredible staff of hardworking Hondurans who pour into the ministry daily. Currently, our team is made up of a preaching minister, house parents, an education assistant, an administrative assistant and an education/ministry driver. In 2020, our goal is to expand our capacity to house and serve teens, but we need to fortify our staff first. To add another part-time house parent position and continue appropriately compensating our existing staff for the value they bring to the ministry, we need to raise an additional $600 per month ($7,200 total yearly). Monthly contributions of any amount would help us invest in our BC team.

BILINGUAL SCHOOL PARTIAL SPONSORSHIPS: $100 MONTHLY (2 NEEDED)

Our education program boasts 19 students who are sponsored to attend a local, Christian, bilingual school. The majority of the students are fully funded, but we have two remaining who are each in need of $100 per month to round out their full costs. A bilingual education has proven to be a game changer for many of our kids. Not only does it give the child increased academic knowledge and opportunities, but it grows them emotionally, spiritually and in their confidence to succeed. Please consider investing in the life of one of these children by giving toward their remaining needs.

BUILDING FACADE REPAIR: $6,500 (ONE-TIME CONTRIBUTION)

We are blessed to have a building that serves the ministry and community in many ways. As an older structure (built in 1912), significant repair needs arise from time to time that must be addressed. The greatest need right now is repairing the building’s exterior which has deteriorated over time. Repairing the building facade is necessary to ensure that the building’s structure remains sound, as well as providing a welcoming exterior for those who come to the ministry. Because the building is located in a historic area of town, the work will be done by a Honduran company that can repair it in accordance with local historical codes. The remaining cost for materials and labor to complete the project is $6,500. Please consider a one-time gift toward this need.

Smaller, One-time Needs

  • Refrigerator: 1 needed - $600

  • Filing cabinets: 2 needed - $175 each

  • Lockers for teen items: 3 needed - $100 each

  • Microwave: 1 needed - $100

  • Mounted wall fans: 7 needed - $100 each

  • Office desk: 1 needed - $75

Christmas is one of our favorite times of the year to celebrate with our BC family. For the past several years, we have taken a special overnight trip to the beach with our BC teens as well as all of our education students and their families. It has been a wonderful way to get outside of the city and enjoy Christmas together in a more relaxed setting. As the education program continues to grow (we have 29 students this year), the logistics and cost of taking everyone on such an involved trip have become difficult. So this year, we are changing things up a bit:

  • We will still take our BC teens and staff on the overnight trip to Tela, a beach a few hours away from the city. The trip will take place Dec. 7th and 8th. The cost is $150 per teen and $100 per staff member to cover an individual’s food, lodging, transportation and gifts for the weekend. Below you can find the profiles of the teens and staff still needing sponsorship.

  • For our education students, this year we will be taking a day trip on Dec. 1 to a water park located about an hour outside of the city. The park is really nice, and the kids haven’t been there before, so we think they will really enjoy it. Plus, taking a day trip means that none of their parents have to coordinate getting a day off from work, which is another aspect of the overnight trip that has become difficult. Thanks to generous sponsors, all of our private education students are already covered for the water park trip!

  • Even though the parents of our education students won’t be going on an overnight trip this year, we would still like to give a little extra to some families who could really use it during the holiday season. The cost to sponsor a family is $100. The profiles of the families in need of sponsorship are listed below.

If you are not able to do a full sponsorship but would still like to contribute a smaller amount, all extra donations will be used to help additional church families during the Christmas season and also help with teen transportation to visit their families during the holiday break.

Thank you for caring for our BC family during this Christmas season! We look forward to sharing new memories with them and thanking God for another year of his blessings, growth and provision. Take a look at the profiles below and please consider contributing. If you have any questions, please contact Courtney@bchonduras.org.
