Aroni and Ian: A loving pair

When I got the call from a friend of a friend to help out an unknown pregnant girl, I never imagined that she would become a daughter to me. Over the past year of living in my home, Aroni has opened up her shy heart to our family. Aroni has not allowed her horrific past to destroy her beautiful heart or her deep faith in God. She has stories that you have no choice but to doubt, but she has the scars to prove it.

Aroni is kind and loving and the best mother to Ian. Ian adores her and she adores him. She struggles with her self-esteem and a slight rebuff can quickly turn into a tearful and intense apology. She is a quiet but funny girl. She is a wonderful artist and often uses her skills to make little cards and posters to brighten my day. Aroni is hungry for a place to call home and a family of her own. I am so very thankful that we can help provide that.

Roly poly Ian is our little man of the house. At one year old he is just starting to play around with the idea of walking. He’s rough and tumble and loves to wrestle around on the couch. His giggles fill our house with joy. He’s definitely a mama’s boy but loves to play as long as mama doesn’t stray too far away.  

We are so blessed by both of these sweet spirits.  We are excited to see Ian’s face as he enjoys the ocean for the first time and watch Aroni share the experience with her baby boy.  Join us in sharing family vacation with Aroni and Ian.

Oscar: Our wonderful house dad

Oscar is a doer. I don’t know what he does during the day when he is not at the building, but I guarantee he is doing. He and Alba are our house parents and watch over the building and the teens during the nighttime hours. I kind of have to stay on top of what Oscar is doing or I find things in the garden or around the building that I don’t expect to be there. Like the two papaya trees growing in the garden I found last week.

Because of Oscar’s doing nature, his hands are into many things. He helps with church services, communion, and other project type things around the facility like building our new doors. I appreciate his many talents and know-how of things related to Honduras and the culture. We love how he cares for all in our ministry and in the building.

Juan: A dedicated father

Juan is Lorna’s husband and Allison and Jennifer’s father. And he is an excellent one. He is incredibly committed and loves them as well as he can. He struggles for work a lot of times, but always finds ways to help make the ends meet for them. Juan is a quiet yet cheerful person and is always willing to help carry benches for church or help with anything you might be working on. He is at all the girls’ school events and meets the bus to pick them up most days when they finish tutoring.

Juan is the most polite person I have ever met I think. I have had him come to our house at different times to help paint and he always is so kind and hard-working. (And sometimes annoyingly polite in that he asks me every time for permission to get water no matter how many times I tell him to get it whenever he wants).

Please help to give this dedicated father a wonderful Christmas with us and his family at the beach!

Wualter: Our hardworking youth minister

Our youth minister Wualter Osorio has had a hard year, but he continues to fight hard every day for our teens. Wualter’s job encompasses so much more than just teaching Bible class on Sundays. He spends most days doing the mundane alongside the teens and showing them how to walk through life as a Christian. He resolves conflict, helps them pick out clothes, and sits down to help with homework when necessary. He infuses every day with a love of Christ and mentoring spirit to the young people he has grown to love. He rejoices alongside us with each victory and we often lean on each other and cry tears of frustration when the pain gets too much. This is not a job for the faint of heart, and Wualter has taken it on willingly and completely.  

Over the years Wualter has become much more than an employee to us. He is a vital member of our team but also a cherished member of our BC family. We often have to encourage him to step back and take a break as he is the first to volunteer for any need and often overworks himself. Help him join us on our BC family Christmas vacation and then take a well deserved break from all of his hard work!

Lorna: Working hard for her family

You couldn’t ever accuse Lorna of not working hard. She will do just about any job to feed her family, and she deserves to relax at the Beach Christmas with us once again this year.

Lorna works with our teams who stay at John and I’s house during the summer helping to cook delicious meals for them.  She has gone to Mi Esperanza for a sewing class, and we had the blessing of watching one of the teams give her a sewing machine of her very own this year.

Then a few months ago Lorna discovered she had a little surprise, a new pregnancy. She was very worried about having another mouth to feed, and we discussed ways she could work from home. One of them was the sewing machine, and then a group also donated for her to start a “pulperia,” a little convenience store inside of her home.

Lorna will continue to cook for our teams during the summers, but she also needed a steady income to support her family from home. Now she has that, and she says she’s slowing saving to add more products as she is able.

We are proud of her and the ways she continues to put her family first. Help reward Lorna for her hard work and sponsor her this year for Beach Christmas!

Any: Our incredible administrative assistant and friend

We are so excited to announce we added a new administrative assistant position this year, and we asked Any to fill the role. Any is a long-time friend of our ministry as she’s the wife of one of long-time bus drivers, Rafa. We are thrilled to have Any and her boys Matthew and Jared alongside Rafa this year at Beach Christmas.

As we grow in staff and in responsibilities, we needed someone here to help with the finances and basic office work of running a nonprofit organization. It’s only a part-time position, and that worked well for Any. She had to quit working her full-time job previously because of health issues, so a part-time position allowed her a better balance. She manages the books, pays several of the bills, keeps track of petty cash for the staff and and handles the transportation and other financial needs of our young adults.

Any has become an important staff member. I don’t know how we survived without an administrative assistant before. We hope you will help us reward Any by sponsoring her trip with us to Beach Christmas!
