Bilingual kids begin classes

Originally posted August 26, 2016

Eight of our bilingual school kiddos began classes last week. We have some spectacular kids in our bilingual program, and we’re thrilled to watch them grow and better themselves over this next year.

This past school year we decided to change bilingual schools entirely. We now have three kids in High Valley School and five in Integrity Academy. Meanwhile, Rosie attends bilingual school at Penzotti, which is a great fit for her. She began there in February on the Honduran schedule and will finish up in November. All our other BC kiddos in bilingual school are on the North American schedule from August to June.

We knew about High Valley because that’s where we enrolled Dayana when Interamerican wasn’t working for her, and we enrolled her brothers Arol and Jonathan in Integrity for similar reasons. The two schools are very different. High Valley suits our kids who need a specialized pace, sometimes slower to fit whatever learning challenges or strengths they each have. Integrity is suited for our kids who need a faster pace, either to stay out of trouble or to best suit their skill set. Both schools are small with class sizes of most often less than 10.

We have learned over the years we can’t treat each child the same. Each has their own capabilities and strengths, and it’s our job to give them their best chance. We believe we have given Dayana, Escarlen and Michel (featured here from left to right) their best chance at High Valley School. And we believe we have given Allison, Jennifer, Francois, Jonathan and Arol (featured from left to right below) their best shot at Integrity Academy.

We love that we have sponsors who are supportive of these changes and continue to encourage our kids to succeed to be the best versions of themselves. The beautiful reality is God created us all differently – our personalities, our looks and even our skill sets. We can’t expect every child to handle a subject or task the same. And our kids have the added difficulty of their own background and often trauma, unique to each of them. We’re blessed to have two schools that honor and understand each child is different and needs specialized attention to succeed.

Please keep our little ones, their teachers, their parents, their school administrators and all of our team in your prayers as we begin this school year. May we teach them to use their blessings to glorify their Creator and to love others as others have loved them.

Please consider sponsoring Brian or Arturo!

–UPDATE: BRIAN AND ARTURO ARE NOW SPONSORED!–

Part of the plan for each of the young adults/teens living at Breaking Chains is that they participate in some type of education or vocation program to give them the skills and confidence to move their lives forward. The students are able to work hard and complete their goals through the help of generous and loving sponsors. We are so grateful that the majority of our young adults are already sponsored, but we have two students remaining this year.

Brian and Arturo attend night school together every night and are working hard to complete eight and ninth grade, respectively. Both Brian and Arturo are excellent students, diligent in their class attendance and homework, and have become staples of our BC family. We are proud of both of these young men, and we want to make sure we are able to continue supporting them as they dream for the future. In order to do so, each young man will need a sponsor of $50 per month to cover transportation and costs associated with homework and school projects.

We humbly ask that you please consider making a monthly commitment to help support Brian and/or Arturo! Both young men have great potential, and we are excited to see where God leads them. If you are interested in contributing, please let us know by commenting below or emailing mail@bchonduras.org. Donations may be made online or via check by following the directions on the “Give” section of bchonduras.org. Thank you for your support!

As a ministry, we are continually grateful that we have friends and supporters like you who are willing to stand with us through all of the joys and hardships that go along with working in urban poverty. Our latest newsletter, available here, highlights both of those different facets.

In this issue, we ask that you rejoice with us as we celebrate two new sisters in Christ, a successful school supply drive, and our thriving education students and young adults. We also give thanks for the wonderful mission teams who have visited and served Breaking Chains recently.

Additionally, we appreciate you lifting us up as we mourn the heartbreaking loss of Erick Castillo, and we ask that you continue to pray for healing, peace and change for the teens on the streets and the culture of violence that surrounds them.

Thank you as always for your continuous love, support and encouragement. We praise God daily that he allows us to know people like you.

Bendiciones,

The Breaking Chains Honduras Team

Nayeli: Seventh grade

Originally posted January 20, 2016

Name: Nayeli

Age: 14

Grade: 7th

Needs: one-time donation of $600 for upfront costs

Nayeli has been a part of our education program since its inception, and over the years we have watched her grow academically and in confidence.

Neither of Nayeli’s parents have much of an education, so she has had to forge her own path and find her own motivation in order to make it through each year of school. Nayeli has three younger siblings, and they look to her as a role model. School has not always been easy for Nayeli. Like many teenagers, she has struggled to maintain focus and realize the need for making wise decisions daily. But this past year, Nayeli recommitted herself and has done exceedingly well in her academics and her attitude.

Making it to seventh grade is a huge achievement in Honduras. We pray daily that God will watch over Nayeli and continue to guide her on the right path. She has already succeeded in so many ways, and we look forward to seeing what the future holds for her.

Nayeli is in need of a one-time donation of $600 to cover her upfront costs such as books, uniforms and school supplies. Please consider contributing to this amazing young girl’s education.

We are blessed at Breaking Chains to have just hired our new preaching minister, Alexander. Alexander, along with his wife and two children, have moved to work with us from Nicaragua. We are excited about what this young family will add to our ministry.

Alexander and his wife would love for their children to have access to a quality education. However, Alexander has just started a new job, and his wife has medical issues which limit their funds. In an effort to help Alexander’s family, we are seeking to sponsor his two children for private school in the city.

His daughter, Alexa, will attend the Santa Monica school along with many other of our BC kids. This is her first year in school. She will begin pre-K and is very excited about the opportunity.

Alexa will need $100 per month for tuition and transportation costs and a one-time donation of $600 for her upfront costs in order to make his schooling possible.

Please consider sponsoring little Alexa for her education this year! We are excited to see the ways in which God continues to work through this family.
