Lorna: Working hard for her family

You couldn’t ever accuse Lorna of not working hard. She will do just about any job to feed her family, and she deserves to relax at the Beach Christmas with us once again this year.

Lorna works with our teams who stay at John and I’s house during the summer helping to cook delicious meals for them.  She has gone to Mi Esperanza for a sewing class, and we had the blessing of watching one of the teams give her a sewing machine of her very own this year.

Then a few months ago Lorna discovered she had a little surprise, a new pregnancy. She was very worried about having another mouth to feed, and we discussed ways she could work from home. One of them was the sewing machine, and then a group also donated for her to start a “pulperia,” a little convenience store inside of her home.

Lorna will continue to cook for our teams during the summers, but she also needed a steady income to support her family from home. Now she has that, and she says she’s slowing saving to add more products as she is able.

We are proud of her and the ways she continues to put her family first. Help reward Lorna for her hard work and sponsor her this year for Beach Christmas!

Any: Our incredible administrative assistant and friend

We are so excited to announce we added a new administrative assistant position this year, and we asked Any to fill the role. Any is a long-time friend of our ministry as she’s the wife of one of long-time bus drivers, Rafa. We are thrilled to have Any and her boys Matthew and Jared alongside Rafa this year at Beach Christmas.

As we grow in staff and in responsibilities, we needed someone here to help with the finances and basic office work of running a nonprofit organization. It’s only a part-time position, and that worked well for Any. She had to quit working her full-time job previously because of health issues, so a part-time position allowed her a better balance. She manages the books, pays several of the bills, keeps track of petty cash for the staff and and handles the transportation and other financial needs of our young adults.

Any has become an important staff member. I don’t know how we survived without an administrative assistant before. We hope you will help us reward Any by sponsoring her trip with us to Beach Christmas!

Ricardo: Embracing the love of a family

To say Ricardo has grown this year would be a serious understatement. Ricardo came to us a very nervous and private young man that was afraid to share anything with us. His life has been marked with tragedy, and he has lost all of his known blood relatives. He is not your typical “street kid,” and struggles with where he fits in anywhere in his world. He has steadily been opening up over the past two years, but this year he has made great strides. This year he has finally begun to let us be his family, to open up his heart and share his fears and loneliness. That opening up has allowed some of those wounds to begin to heal and has allowed us to really love him.  

This year Ricardo finished tenth grade, and prayerfully, he will go on to graduate high school next year. Every completed year of school is a huge accomplishment for our kids, and we are so proud that he was able to stick out the year, be a part of the band and move on to his final year of high school.  

Interacting with Ricardo used to be a real chore, but now he is quick with a smile and a funny story to tell. He has become a loved favorite and a leader to new young people joining our home. We are excited to see where Ricardo goes in his life and to be the people he calls family always.

Eugenio: A quiet but constant presence

Eugenio is a man of few words. The father of four is always relatively quiet, but he is a solid and constant presence in the lives of his children. And that kind of stability is exactly what they need. 

Eugenio and his family have been a part of Breaking Chains for many years. They lived in our BC facility back during the time when the ministry was housing families, and they have since moved on to live independently. Though they no longer live at Breaking Chains, the family still continues to worship with us and their children are sponsored through our education program. 

Eugenio works throughout the week doing different construction jobs. He doesn't make a lot, but what he does make he puts toward his family's needs. He cares about his children and does his best to make sure they have what they need to succeed. 

Beach Christmas is the time of year when we see Eugenio show the most personality. He loves his children, and his face lights up as he gets to spend time chasing them around the beach and enjoying the water. Please continue contributing so that we can have another wonderful Beach Christmas with Eugenio this year!

Erika: A dedicated mother of four

If we gave out an award for highest attendance at Sunday worship, we would definitely have to give it out to Erika. She is always present and willing to lend a hand. In fact, the only time I remember her missing was when her newest little girl Genesis came into this world in February.

Erika already has three kids, and her newest Genesis wasn’t planned. But it’s beautiful to see how she loves each of her kids individually and completely. Each of Erika’s other kids are in our education program, and I can always count on Erika to support me in a problem with or with their homework, despite her inability to read herself.

Watching Erika love her kids is a blessing to all of us, especially in light of her background. She is truly dedicated to them. Will you help us reward Erika by sponsoring her for Beach Christmas?

Maira: Helping to lighten the load

We started several new staff members this year, and one of them is our education assistant, Maira. She helps me with the ever-growing education program, and I’m very grateful for it. We’re excited to invite her to Beach Christmas 2017!

We now have more than 20 kids in our education program and five in school in our young adult program, and we needed help keeping track of their behavior, talking to teachers, checking on grades, covering books and most of all being available for homework.

Maira works part-time for us in the afternoon and in the morning she works for Santa Monica, one of the schools where several of our kids attend. Being an employee at Santa Monica allows her to easily check up on those students, speak with teachers and keep track of how each of our kids are doing.

Maira spends her weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings at our ministry house, available to help any one of our education kids and teens with what they might need to do. This allows our staff and BC team to spend time doing the rest of the jobs necessary to make our organization run properly.
